AFFR 2018: Building Happiness debate
In collaboration with BNA and AIR, AFFR is organizing a debate on the theme ‘Building Happiness’. Moderated by Saskia van Stein, the session will explore the contribution of architecture to the pursuit of happiness. In the current good economic climate, how aware are we of the fact that our faith in progress can no longer be separated from its destructive sideeffects: climate change, social inequality, cultural conflicts and terror? Are engineered happiness and a liveable city attainable for just a small minority of the world’s population? Or are there opportunities for everybody? And what can we learn from the New Towns from the time that an engineered society was still so self-evident? A conversation with, among others, Michelle Provoost (INTI), Fred Schoorl (BNA), Marina Otero (HNI) and Christopher Smith, director of New Town Utopia, the documentary that will be screened after the discussion.
The theme of AFFR 2018 is ‘Building Happiness’. We live in a period of economic boom. Construction, development and speculation are in full swing again, and resounding growth rates are the norm. The tourist industry is working at full capacity, bringing millions of tourists to cities with attractive architecture. Yet there is growing recognition that we cannot separate our concept of progress from its destructive side effects: climate change, social inequality, cultural conflict and terrorism. Is the prospect of engineered happiness and a liveable city reserved for a small proportion of the world’s population, or are there opportunities for all?
The tenth AFFR takes place from 10 to 14 October 2018. After the opening film, the festival moves to LanterenVenster cinema. This year the AFFR will again welcome dozens of international filmmakers and an expected 7500 fans of films, city and architecture from all over the world. Click here for more information.
