Designing Community! #1: Co-creating XL urban transformations
Learn about co-creating large scale urban area development. As part of the Rotterdam Architecture Month AIR will examine new ways in which community involvement informs urban design, architecture and planning. Community is one of the most used terms in architectural discourse. How might designers apply their skills to add to a sense of belonging and inclusion within communities? How do they co-create complex spatial development? And how does design help shape meaningful places that facilitate the encounter of unknown others and reflect both individual identities as well as shared stories? The two-day ‘designing community’ program consists of public lectures by experienced designers and discussions between inspired city makers. It explores high-quality architecture and investigates the potential of innovative design concepts.
White Arkitekter x KCAP
On this opening evening, we will look at large-scale urban developments and learn how leading international design practices co-create a sustainable future. White Arkitekter (Sweden) will show how they are moving a whole city! AIR invites anthropologist Viktoria Walldin and architect Anna Edblom to share their inspiring work with the citizens of Kiruna. Due to ground deformation as result of mining, parts of the city need to be moved several kilometers away. This is one of the most ambitious relocation projects in recent decades. Architect and urbanist Jeroen Dirckx, a partner at KCAP (Rotterdam), will share the firms FredericiaC project. An extensive waterfront regeneration framework that will expand the inner city of the Danish city of Fredericia by about 25%. Jeroen Dirckx will talk about the intense co-creative process with local citizens and competing design firms.
